A celebration of Switzerland and the excellence of Swiss education last night at our Swiss Learning event. We were honoured to welcome H.E Massimo Baggi, the Ambassador of Switzerland to the UAE and Bahrain, and the Swiss Embassy team, to join us for an evening of recognition of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and the UAE. We were also delighted to host some of the top Swiss day and boarding schools, to showcase their summer camps. Thank you to the team at Swiss Canonica for the delightful Swiss canapés, fondue and raclette.

Congratulations to our Grade 5 reading superstars, who reached the final of the Chevron Readers’ Cup competition recently. More than 5000 children from schools across the GCC took part virtually in the first round of the competition, and our Primary team was one of 20 teams who competed in the final as part of the Emirates Literature Festival. This is the first time that SISD students have reached the final, and we are very proud. The girls were fantastic representatives of the school and demonstrated our BEST values to perfection! Well done.

Our Secondary students had the pleasure of meeting author Wafa Tarnowska last week, as part of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature. Wafa is the author of "Amazing Women of the Middle East”, a book about 25 women from the Middle East, who have created a legacy through vision, leadership, courage and determination; from the beautiful signer Fairuz, to the outstanding international lawyer, Amal Clooney. Wafa spoke about the journey she had taken, her own goals and aspirations; the students then had the chance to meet Wafa and to have their books signed by her.

Our peer-led learning programme is well underway! Last week, our Secondary students undertook a number of Maths problem-solving initiatives with their Primary peers. Our older students supported with fraction problems and building 3D shapes with a range of materials - a mutually beneficial and enjoyable event for all!

We are excited to announce that we will be launching our new Athletics Academy in September, in conjunction with AIS Athletics. Following on from the success of our recent Speedo Swim Academy, the new Athletics Academy will offer talented athletes dedicated training sessions before and after school with the coaching team from AIS. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in national and international meets.

Grade 1 are just rocking it! Students in Grade 1 dressed as Rockstars this week, to celebrate the launch of our new app, Times Tables Rockstars. Times Tables Rockstars is an award-winning Maths learning platform where children can practise their times tables in a fun, interactive way.

Our KG2 students have enjoyed another exciting week, filled with interesting activities and a range of fun learning experiences. They continued working on their sounds in all of our languages - Arabic, English, German and French. The classes have also explored the story of "Red Riding Hood'' and recreated the story in form of a little theatre. In Science, the children took care of their plants in our SISD Garden - they are excited to watch them grow! There was lots of discussion about how we can express gratitude towards our community helpers in SISD and the children thanked them for caring for all of us. Finally, the students continued to learn about the weather and created a Weatherman show for their classmates - the end of a very busy week!

Our Grade 4 students are working hard to create and build their design projects for this year's Grade 4 Design Fair. They are following the IB Design Cycle, and using their investigative and creative skills to design their own ideas. The Design Fair will take place on the 23rd February at 8am.

Musical showcase: wow, wow, wow - our Grade 5 students really did raise the roof this morning! We were treated to an amazing musical production from our Grade 5 team this week, and what a joy it was. In addition to singing beautifully in English, French, German and Arabic, the students addressed topics such as ocean protection, sustainability, plastic recycling and more – well done Grade 5!

A very inspiring session from Barry Lee Cummings on Digital Safety and Cyberbullying for our parents and students today. All students from Grade 3 to Grade 12 participated in bespoke sessions, talking about the importance of staying safe online, protecting their own reputation and understanding the implications of their social media actions. Barry Lee Cummings is a founder of the Beat The Cyberbully initiative which provides education, awareness and training on online and mobile topics to children and young adults.

Grade 1 students enjoyed an online author session with the author of "Zim, Zam, Zoom", James Carter, yesterday. The children learnt all about poems and writing poetry, and also had the opportunity to ask questions about being an author. James performed music and interactive poetry with the students, and then taught them how to make simile poetry.
The community of SISD shares its heartfelt condolences to the Abdulsalam family, on the recent passing of Mr Jamal Abdulsalam, Board Governor for SISD. We are very appreciative for the work, support and commitment that Mr Abdulsalam gave to the school during his tenure as CEO of DHCC and Board Director for the school.
Swiss Learning – the benefits of Swiss education and Swiss Summer camps
We are delighted to be welcoming the group of Swiss Learning schools to SISD on Tuesday 7th February, to enjoy an evening of Swiss excellence and education. Massimo Baggi, Ambassador of Switzerland to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, will be present at the evening, to celebrate the 50th anniversary year of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Switzerland.
