Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai develops homework in meaningful ways, emphasizing the importance of connecting classroom learnings to the real world. Homework is viewed as an opportunity to connect inquiry in the classroom to life at home. It is used to enhance inquiry, allow for student independence and develop connections. Homework is designed to be personalized, targeted and meaningful, where quality is valued over quantity. In Primary school, homework is divided into mandatory and non-mandatory. Mandatory homework targets reading, word work/grammar, and math skills and concepts. Optional homework includes concept-based activities connected to the unit of inquiry. In Secondary School, homework is recorded by students in their diaries. Teachers only assign work that contributes to learning. Students are expected to complete one to two hours of homework (depending on their Grade level) per core subject, per week.   To learn more about homework expectation please refer to our School Handbook.
The Mission of SISD is to provide an inspiring, inclusive and challenging learning environment while celebrating academic excellence.  We welcome students of determination and give them access to appropriate provision, resources and curricular options. “At its heart, inclusive education is a provision that is committed to educating all students, including students identified as experiencing special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in a common learning environment. In such settings, all students have access to quality instruction, intervention and support, so that they experience success in learning. Inclusive education providers create a culture of collaboration, in a landscape of mutual respect and equality for all. All students are given opportunities to be successful learners, to form positive social relationships with peers, and to become fully participating members of the learning community.” (Dubai Inclusive Education Policy Framework, 2017) In line with this principle, SISD encourages and supports all students, including those identified as having additional needs and/or talented and gifted to become successful, global minded, enthusiastic lifelong learners who will confidently take advantage of future opportunities and help make a difference. We fully support the inclusive aims of the Government of Dubai’s ‘My Community… A City for Everyone’ and the focus on education which is part of a wider vision for Dubai to become a fully inclusive city by 2020. Any behavior-related issues, including those related to the forms of bullying, should always be immediately addressed by the teacher responsible for the students at that time, including incidences on hallways, during playtime etc. In the event that a student displays repetitive behaviors unaligned with the School Behaviour Policy, faculty members are encouraged to record them on the student’s individual profile on their iSAMS, accessible to all teachers working with the student. In case of behavioral episodes that involve inappropriate use of language, physical aggression, self-harm or harm to others, the witness is expected to write an incident report and share it with the Early Years/Primary/Secondary Deputy. Our approach to Pastoral Care emphasizes the central role that reflection plays in education. For students who find difficulty in respecting the behaviour agreements, a restorative approach centered on reflection is used. To learn more about our Essential Agreements, contact our Pastoral Care Team. Learn more about our Behaviour Agreements in: ·      Early Years ·      Primary School ·      Secondary School
Field trips are an integral part of school life at SISD and are authentically linked to the academic curricula throughout the school. Careful planning and thought go into organising visits and activities that will enrich, educate and inspire students. Some trips are designed for specific age groups to improve their understanding of classroom material through practical experience. Others bring together students of different ages to encourage interaction. Shorter or longer trips are offered with the goal of promoting learning and enquiry. We go to great lengths to offer our students other valuable opportunities beyond the classroom which will enrich their understanding of the world.
