Christine Isobel Sonmez

ARTS AND DESIGN TEACHER
MOTTO:

“There is, has been and will always be a certain group of people whom inspiration visits. Its made up of all of those who have consciously chosen their calling and do their job with love and imagination; Their work becomes one continuous adventure as long as they manage to keep discovering new challenges in it.” – Wislawa Szymborska, 1996 Nobel Prize for Literature lecture.

My name is Chris Sonmez, I have two daughters, one who works in the fashion marketing industry in London and the other is also a teacher in Dubai. I have been teaching in college, day and boarding schools for the last twenty years in the UK, South Korea, Macau, Brazil and more recently in Italy. I am passionate about the arts, teaching, travelling and learning about other cultures, peoples and customs. I studied Textiles at Loughborough university in the UK. In my own practice I am particularly interested in different approaches to drawing and mixed media assemblage and sculptural textiles. Previous to teaching I worked in the graphics and design industries which has certainly contributed to my approach to teaching today.

I love swimming and cycling and enjoy working on community and collaborative projects. I have previously taken part in voluntary NGO projects in Bhutan, Rio de Janiero and Sri Lanka. I am driven by my curiosity for the world at large, I take photographs daily and always have a sketchbook ‘on the go’. I hope always to inspire my students. I look forward to making a valuable contribution to the development of the IBDP and MYP programmes and collaborating with my colleagues, to enhance the profile of the art and design departments within the school.
