I performed at the piano since 1999 and taught singing with The MGA Academy and Stagecoach Theatre Arts since 2007 while studying my Bachelor of Music at Edinburgh University, UK. I was inspired to teach further by community projects from Rehabilitation to Opera and much between. Focussing on GCSE and A Level Music and Music Technology through my Post Graduate Certificate of Education in multicultural and diverse London schools I noticed how the power of my students’ voices was so integral to their learning in music and beyond in terms of their understanding of language. I created a study into ´Improving Singing through recording´ and studied Vygotsky and Piaget Foundations of Learning for an MAEd at London Metropolitan University.
My teaching has taught me that I learn every day from my students simultaneously who have their own unique, cultural, social and personal reactions to music from Indian Ragas to African polyrhythms and in both secular and sacred contexts. We all have different relationships to Music and the Performing Arts and this should be celebrated in order that peoples of different backgrounds can ultimately improve what is a universal language for improving global communication.
