Back to School Checklist

Whether you are a day student or a boarding student, the start of the school year is an exciting time filled with parents and students scrambling to be prepared. Use this list and our top tips to make everything go a bit smoother.

Back To School Shopping List

Here you will find the checklist of items you will need to be prepared for the new school year:

  • School Bag: arguably one of the most important back-to-school items is a school bag, all year it will be used to carry academic and personal items around campus. Look for a durable and good-quality bag with a capacity large enough to fit all supplies in.
  • Pencil Case: this keeps all your writing equipment together, you want it to fit all your supplies in.
  • Uniform: we are very proud of our uniform here at SISD, students are expected to wear this at all times, so please ensure this is purchased before starting the school year.
  • Textbooks And Notebooks: ensure that all textbooks needed are purchased, or you are prepared to purchase them throughout the school year. Notebooks are also handy to keep in your bag and essential to stay organised.
  • Pens And Pencils: investing in a good pen that is smooth to write with is always a good idea, also should have spares to hand – for when a pen runs out. Pencils should be sharpened, keep a sharpener to keep it this way!
  • Highlighters, Sticky Notes, And Index Cards: these are most essential for exams and revision, but are perfect for students who want to be organised throughout the year.
  • Folders And Binders: items that will also aid in keeping organised throughout the year – your future self will thank you for it.
  • Mathes Equipment: equipment such as contractors, rulers and calculators may be needed for your studies.
  • Dictionaries And Thesauruses: it can be helpful to keep a dictionary/thesaurus in your bag if it reflects your study as it is a good way to enhance your quality of work.

And for boarding students also think about:

  • Personal Care Items: such as toiletries.
  • Laundry Supplies: clothes hangers, laundry bags, etc.
  • Electronics: chargers, adapters, headphones and any devices.
  • Entertainment: things to keep you occupied in your spare time, such as books.
  • Important Items: travel documents, cards, cash and emergency contact information.

Packing Advice (For Boarding Students)

  • Make a list of everything you need to pack before you start this ensures nothing is forgotten in the craziness of packing.
  • Pack your heaviest items first, then fill in the gaps with lighter items.
  • Roll your clothes to save space (this can also help avoid creasing).
  • Label everything with your name and room number – just in case anything gets lost or misplaced.
  • Pack a small carry-on bag with essentials you’ll need during your trip, this way you can access them easily without having to look through your bigger bag/s.

Making The Most Of Your School Experience

Explore the Campus: Find your way around the school and locate important buildings. Learn about our campus and facilities before starting.

Stay Organised: Keep a planner or calendar to track assignments and deadlines, and use a filing system to organise your papers (folders and binders may come in handy here).

Take Care of Yourself: Eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and manage your stress. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being should always be a priority.

Get Involved in After School Activities: Join clubs, sports teams, or other organisations! This is a great way to make new friends, reduce stress and connect with people who have similar interests to you.

Stay Connected with Your Family and Friends: Write letters, send emails, or make phone calls. Especially for boarding students, it is important to stay in contact with your loved ones. Talk to a friend, peer or adult if you experience homesickness.

Be Open to New Experiences: At this exciting time try new things and step outside your comfort zone!

Here at SISD, we wish you a successful and happy start to the new school year!
